Unit 01 – Transformation of Sentences: Simple, Compound and Complex.
1. Simple Sentence Definition – A simple sentence is “a sentence consisting of only
one independent clause also known as a main or principal clause. An Independent
clause is a clause that consists of only one subject (S) and one finite verb (F.V) or
predicate.
What is Subject?
A subject is any noun, pronoun or noun phrase that does the action in a sentence. It is most often
found at the beginning of a sentence.
What is Predicate?
The part of a sentence which has the verb, and which tells us what the subject is or does.
Example: In the sentence — ‘He went cycling after returning from school’ the predicate is
‘went cycling after returning from school’
What is a Finite Verb?
A finite verb is a verb that changes its form if the tense of the sentence changes or the subject's
number (singular or plural) or person changes is called a finite verb.
Example of the finite verb when the tense changes:
1. I (Subject) enjoy (verb) teaching (verb) English. (Present simple tense or Present indefinite).
This sentence has two verbs namely enjoy and teaching. Now let's understand
Which verb is finite and which one is non-finite?
2. I enjoyed (finite verb) teaching (non-finite verb) English. (Past indefinite tense).
After changing the above sentence from Present indefinite to Past indefinite the form of the verb
‘enjoy’ changed but ‘teaching’ doesn’t, therefore, the verb ‘enjoy’ will considered as a finite verb and
‘teaching’ as a non-finite verb.
3. I will enjoy (finite verb) teaching (non-finite verb) English.
Example of the finite verb when the Subject’s number changes:
1. Renu (Subject/Singular) plays (Verb) football.
2. Renu and her friends (Subject/Plural) play (Finite Verb) football.
Please notice the moment the subject’s number changed its form from singular to plural the verb’s
form also got changed thus a finite verb.
Example of the finite verb when the Subject’s person changes:
1. I (Subject/ 1st form) read (Verb) books.
2. She (Subject/3rd form) reads (finite verb) books.
Please notice that the moment the subject’s person got changed from ‘I’ to ‘She’ the verb’s form also
got changed thus a finite verb.

- I am happy.
- She exercises every morning.
- His dog barks loudly.
- My school starts at 8:00.
- We always eat dinner together.
