What Are Resources?



Resources are anything with utility or value. This means anything that can
satisfy a need or be of benefit. Examples of resources include water,
electricity, vehicles, vegetables, and textbooks. Resources can have economic
value, meaning they can be bought or sold, or they can have other forms of
worth, such as being essential for daily life or well-being. Some items may gain
value over time. For instance, traditional remedies passed down through
generations may not have much commercial value now, but if they are patented
and marketed, they could become economically valuable. Two factors that can
transform substances into valuable resources are time and technology.

1. Natural Resources: These are resources derived from nature and are used
with little to no modification. Examples include air, water, soil, and minerals.
Natural resources can be further categorized:

- Renewable Resources: These resources can replenish themselves quickly and
are not likely to run out. Examples include solar energy, wind energy, and water.
Renewable resources are generally sustainable as they can naturally regenerate.

- Non-renewable Resources: These resources exist in finite amounts and cannot
be replaced quickly once they are depleted. Examples include coal, petroleum,
and natural gas. These resources take thousands or even millions of years to
