Behavior Support - Defined by what the individual needs. Minimizes the use of punishers. The individual is in control. The focus is more on the teaching of functional skills that will eliminate the need for negative behavior. Behavior Control - Staff is in control. The focus is to decrease the frequency of undesired behavior through punishment or cost response. Escape - Problem behavior can be negatively reinforced by the escape or avoiding a demand activity. Attention - Engaging in a problem behavior to get someone to pay attention or spend time with them. Tangible - Want or access to an item, service, food, or activity. Sensory - Provides input into one or more of the sensory pathways; vision, hearing, touch, smell or taste. Internal antecedent - Conditions within the body that contribute to challenging behavior. Examples of internal antecedents - Sudden illness or pain, waxing or warning signs or symptoms, recent or past injury/trauma. External antecedent - Condition or event occurring outside the person which increases chance or set the stage of a behavior occurring. Examples of External antecedents - Crowding, noise, thinking they are being threatened, believing they have been assaulted Four requirements for functional analysis - 1. Challenging behaviors are specifically defined 2. When, where? 3. Events identified that predict when the behavior is likely and not likely to occur. Hypotheses or ideas are developed as to function of the behavior. 4. Documentation ABC tracking sheet - Antecedent, Behavior, Consequences/outcome
