Jawarhal Lal Nehru, the first prime minister of Independent India gave his inaugral address
on August 14, 1947 on the eve of India's independence from British colonial rule. This
historic speech was delivered to the constituent assembly. A body responsible for framing the
constitution of India. His speech encapsulated hopes, aspirations and challenges facing the
newly independent nation. His speech also reflected the ideals of democracy, freedom and
just nation which were central to the Indian independence movement. He acknowledges the
struggle of soldiers and common people to gain the freedom and he also paid tribute to the
efforts of Mahatma Gandhi, known as the father if nation and highlighted the needs to uphold
his ideals of non- violence, humility and serve to humanity.
Many years ago, we entered into a profound commitment and made the tryst of destiny and
now the moment has finally arrived where we fulfil our promises, not entirely or completely
but significantly. The very next day, India will awaken to a new existence of freedom. This
rare moment in history signifies the transition from old to the new, marking the emergence of
"suppressed soul of the nation that finds its utterance." It is appropriate that at this juncture,
we must dedicate ourselves to the service of India, her people and the broader cause of
humanity. From the beginning, India has embarked on an endless search for freedom, along
with success and failures but it has never lost or forgotten its ideals. Now we draw an ending
to the period of struggle and misfortune as India rediscovers itself again. This achievement is
a step towards the greater accomplishments that lie ahead. A question has been posed if the
people of India are courageous enough to face the opportunity and challenges that the future
will accompany.
Power and freedom comes with responsibility. This duty lies within the assembly
representating the people of India. Before gaining independence, we have endured several
hardships and some of them still linger. However, the past is gone and the future summons
us. The road ahead would not be easy. Thus, we must work tirelessly towards fulfulling our
promises to serve India and those who have suffered and to end poverty, disease and
inequality. This is not just for India but for the entire world as we all are interconnected to
such an extent that even peace, freedom , prosperity and disaster in this one world cannot be
split into isolated fragments.
The address makes an urge to the people of India to join in the journey with full faith and
confidence. This is a time for unity and not for petty criticisms or blame games. Together we
must build a noble India where all children will thrive. Today the day appointed by destiny
arrives and India stands proud, free and independent from struggles. The new star of freedom
rises in the east signifying the new era of freedom that brings hope and we must ensure that
this hope never fades. Although there are many challenges, we unfold a new chapter in the
history and we must fully live it.
Despite the challenges, we celebrate our achievement and this freedom. Our first though and
tribute goes to the architect of nation, Mahatma Gandhi, considered as the father of nation
