Fire Officer I Study Guide, 2023 Describe an assistant chief's responsibilities. - Officers at these levels are usually in charge of major functional areas within the department, such as training, emergency operations, support services, and fire prevention. Explain the differences between autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire leadership styles. - Autocratic leadership is a leadership style in which managers make decisions unilaterally, without input from subordinates. In the context of the fire service, the autocratic style of leadership is required in two situations. The first situation occurs when the fire company is involved in a high-risk, emergency scene activity such as conducting a primary search during a structure fire. The second situation occurs when the fire officer needs to take immediate corrective supervisory activity, such as during a "control, neutralize, command" response to a confrontation. Pages 43 and 69. Democratic leadership is a leadership style in which managers reach decisions with the input of the employees but are responsible for making the final decision. The officer should use the democratic style of leadership when planning project or developing the daily work plan of the company. This approach can also be used in some low-risk emergency situations. Pages 44 and 69. Laissez-faire leadership is a policy or attitude of lettings things take their own course, without interfering. This moves the decision making from the fire officer to the individual fire fighters. The fire officer depends on the fire fighters' good judgement and sense of responsibility to get things done within basic guidelines. The laissez-faire approach is an effective leadership style when working with experienced firefighters and when handling routine duties that pose little personal hazard. Pages 44 and 69. Identify and explain the four-step grievance procedure. - Explain the differences between the four approaches to determine a leader. - Describe how to go from a ventilation-limited to a fuel limited fire. - Explain the chain of custody for evidence. - Identify the three subprocesses of the Kotter leadership study. - Identify the elements of a routine report. - Define noise interference in reference to communications. - Explain how to evaluate the effectiveness of written procedures. - Identify the two obligations of a Fire Officer when a mayday is called. - The first obligation is to maintain radio discipline so that command can determine the mayday location and situation. Reward power: The target person complies to obtain rewards believed to be controlled by the agent. Expert power: The target person complies due to a belief that the gent has special knowledge. Referent power: The target person complies due to admiration of or identification with the agent and seeks approval. Coercive power: The target person complies to avoid punishment believed to be controlled by the agent. Page 47. Page 120. Explain Blake and Mouton's managerial grid. - The grid theory assumes that every decision made and every action taken in the workplace are driven by people's values, attitudes, and beliefs. At the individual level, these values are based on two fundamental concerns that influence behavior - a concern for people and a concern for results. Page 42. Each color represents a specific type of hazard. Blue represents health hazards, red represents flammability hazards, and yellow represents the material's instability hazard. Within each color diamond, there is a number from 0 to 4 that represents the relative hazard of each. The number 0 means that the material poses essentially no hazard, whereas a 4 indicates extreme danger. The last quadrant of the diamond is white and is used to indicate special hazards. This area could include letters or numbers. This marking system also requires labels to be affixed to containers inside the structure to indicate the hazards of the substance. In general, the system requires an NFPA 704 marker at each entrance to the building, on doorways to chemical storage areas, and on fixed storage tanks. Pages 176-177. Explain the difference between a base budget and a supplemental budget. - The base budget is the level of funding that would be required to maintain all services at the currently authorized levels, including adjustments for inflation and salary increases.
