Relationships in Advancing Student Success
Introduction
Peer relationships play a crucial role in shaping the academic and social
experiences of students. This research study aims to explore the dynamics
and consequences of peer relationships in the context of student success. By
examining the existing literature and local studies, this report will provide
insights into the factors that influence peer interactions and their impact on
student outcomes.
Literature Review
The existing body of research highlights the significant influence of peer
relationships on various aspects of student success. Studies have shown that
positive peer interactions can foster a sense of belonging, enhance academic
motivation, and promote the development of essential social and emotional
skills (Smith & Barkley, 2019; Wentzel & Muenks, 2016). Conversely,
negative peer dynamics, such as bullying or social exclusion, can lead to
adverse outcomes, including decreased academic performance, mental
health issues, and increased risk of dropout (Juvonen & Graham, 2014;
Rueger et al., 2016).
Local Studies
A recent study conducted by researchers at the local university examined
the impact of peer relationships on the academic achievement of high school
students (Lim & Tan, 2020). The findings revealed that students who
reported strong, supportive peer networks demonstrated higher levels of
academic engagement, self-efficacy, and overall academic performance
compared to their peers with less positive peer relationships. Additionally,
the study highlighted the role of peer-assisted learning strategies, such as
collaborative problem-solving and peer tutoring, in enhancing student
learning and achievement.
