Diabetes Mellitus
Definition:
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels
resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both.
Causes:
Type 1 Diabetes:
Autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, leading to absolute insulin deficiency.y
Type 2 Diabetes:
Insulin resistance, a condition where cells do not respond properly to insulin, and/or impaired insulin
secretion.
Types:
Type 1 Diabetes:
An autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing
cells in the pancreas.
Type 2 Diabetes:
The most common type, characterized by insulin resistance and/or impaired insulin secretion.
Gestational Diabetes:
Diabetes that develops during pregnancy.
Other Specific Types:
These include monogenic diabetes, maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY), and drug-
induced diabetes.
Risk Factors:
Family History:
Having a family member with diabetes increases your risk.
