INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the General Chemistry B Module. Now that you have completed the
module General Chemistry A, you will be able to apply the basic principles that you
have learnt to two new exciting sub-disciplines of chemistry – physical chemistry and
organic chemistry.
This module is divided into two parts:
Part 1: Introductory Physical Chemistry
Part 2: Introductory Organic Chemistry

Part 1
Introductory Physical Chemistry
Physical chemistry is a branch of chemistry which investigates the effects of chemical
structure on physical properties of matter. It aims to develop a fundamental
understanding at the molecular and atomic level of how materials behave and how
chemical reactions occur; knowledge that is relevant in nearly every area of
chemistry. It also provides the basis for modern methods of measurements within all
areas of Chemistry.
