This laboratory component involves recognising and naming a number of skeletal bones. Use the
diagram (Figure 2.1) to prepare for the lab component.

1. List five main functions of bone.
2. List the main components (tissue types) of the skeletal system.
3. List the names of the main cartilage types. Which of these forms of cartilage is most closely
associated with bone.
4. Label the following bones on the skeletons above (Figure 2.1): skull, clavicle, scapula, humerus,
radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, sternum, xiphoid process, manubrium, ribs,
vertebrae, sacrum, os cox, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals.
5. On Figure 2.1, using different coloured pencils, shade in the bones that comprise the axial and
the appendicular skeleton. Use different colours to also shade in the pectoral girdle and the
pelvic girdle.
