• A prokaryotic cell is a unicellular organism that
lacks a membrane-bound nucleus, mitochondria,
or any other membrane-bound organelle.
• The word prokaryote comes from Greek word
(pro) which means “before” and (karyon) stands
for “nut or kernel”.
• Based on fossil evidence, first inhabitants on
earth appearing 3.5 to 3.8 billion years ago during
the precambrian period
• Eg: Archaea and bacteria (divisions)
