Knowing what inflammation is one of the basis principals of understand pathology and medicine in
general. as a future nurse or medical doctor you really need to understand it .

imagine you are late for class and try to grab a cup of hot coffee , unfortunately the hot coffee
accidentally spills on your skin . The immediate changes that happen to your skin is what basically
inflammation is about .

DEFINITION: INFLAMMATION IS BASICALLY A CELL'S RESPONSE TO INJURY. Injury being anything that
causes harm .it can be chemical or mechanical .

Inflammation is characterized by 5 major changes (these have to be Mastered)

1. Redness (rubor =remember red rubber)

2.hotness (calor = remember calories burning there is a lot of heat)

3. Swelling (tumor = remember tumors)

4.pain (dolor=Dollar 💵 you have to go through pain)

5.loss of function (functio laesa)

It's important to know how the above come about and also their Latin names

1. How the redness comes about. This happens due to the leakage of red blood cells from the blood
vessels they are supposed to be in to the outside space ( from intravascular to extra vascular)

The leakage happens due to the increased permeable of the blood vessels that is Usually caused by
inflammatory cells that try to leave the intravascular space to the extra vascular and hence cause micro
damage to the blood vessels and this results into the rbc leaving use the made spaces to the
extravascular. All in all the redness is due to the presence of red blood cells.
