and Longinus as to which to which standard should must be used in literary

It believed that literary criticism has been around as long as literature.
During the 4th century BC, Plato and Aristotle was one of the literary critics
who provided recommendations for excellent work of literature without
poets and writers Plato’s critiques of poetry as secondary and false were
formative as well. The poetics, which Aristotle's composed , introduced the
ideas of mimesis and catharsis for the first time.


Plato is famous for having banished poetry and poets from the ideal
city of the Republic. According to him, poetry or art in general is copy. It is
two steps away from reality. The creation of poets and artist works are merely
copies of copies of ideal reality, they are falsifications of the facts, worthless,
and even possibly deceptive. Plato and Aristotle beliefs contradicts with each
other Aristotle rejected some Plato’s beliefs about the nature of reality
because he was more concerned with the physical world. Aristotle claims that
“tragedy imitates the action of best people in society, and comedy the worst
sort of people in society” Aristotle’s definition of tragedy might be an
imitation of an action which has serious and far reaching consequences and
comedy deals in the trivial and the inconsequential. Tragic events must
therefore focus on the lives of great men because only their action have an
impact on the community. Longinus based on his theory in this work of
aesthetic . He gives example of good writing and bad writing from an
aesthetic point of view. The goal according to longinus is to achieve sublime
