Question 1 (30 marks)
(a) (i) A small business is considering purchasing a photocopier. Its price before
VAT is €5 500 and VAT is charged at 23%. Find the purchase price of the photocopier.
(ii) Its purchase value depreciates by 20% each year for 4 years. Find the value of
the photocopier at the end of the 4 years.
(b) There is also the option of leasing the photocopier for 4 years. The cost is €120 per month
before VAT, which is charged at 23%. What would be the total cost of leasing a photocopier
for 4 years? How much more expensive is the total lease price compared to the purchase
price?

, (c) A sum of money was invested for 4 years at 2% compound interest per year. At the end of
the 4 years, it amounted to €6 500. Find the sum invested, to the nearest euro.
(d) The business owner invested €4 000 for 3 years at a fixed rate of compound interest.
At the end of the 3 years, it amounted to €4 434·87. Find the rate of interest as a
percentage to 1 decimal place.
