Lesson 4
,What is Population Dynamics?
• Is the study of how, when, and why the changes
in populations occur
• Deal with the changes in population density
(number of individuals in a given are) in relation
to fluctuating ecological events
• Primary Ecological Events – birth, death,
immigration, and emigration
, What is Population Dynamics?
Secondary Ecological Events
- any factor that affects the primary ecological
events
- may be biotic or abiotic factors that influence the
rate, extent, or length of the primary ecological
events such as predation and temperature.
- are regulating factors that prevent a population
from reaching its maximum biotic potential
Environmental Resistance – the collective
action of limiting the biotic and abiotic factors
