MERISTEMATIC TISSUE:
Characteristics-
1. Similar in structure
2. Uniform thin cellulose cell wall
3. Shape- spherical-oval- polygonal- rectangular (can assume in any shape)
4. Compactly arranged- no intercellular spaces between them
5. Possess prominent nuclei
6. Vacuoles are absent. If present, small in size and many in no.
Function-
1. Increase the length( results= height)
2. Increase in girth (results= thickness)

APICAL MERISTEM
Location-
1. Growing tips of stems and roots- at shoot apex and root apex
2. Apices of the leaves
Function-
Bring about the elongation of the roots and stems, resulting in increased in height of the plants.
INTERCALARY MERISTEM
Location-
At the base of the leaves or internodes (stems of grasses, other monocots)
Function-
Increase the length of organ in which they occur.
