URINARY CATHETERIZATION
- A medical procedure of inserting a catheter through male or female
urethra’s opening direct to the bladder for the purpose of withdrawing
urine. It is an aseptic procedure for which sterile equipment is required.
PURPOSES OF URINARY CATHETERIZATION:
1. To prevent and relieve over distention of the bladder owing to the inability
to urinate.
2. To empty the bladder as a measure, preparatory to instillation, irrigation or
operation or when obstetrical or postoperative condition contraindicates a
voluntary urination in a normal way.
3. To obtain a urine specimen.
4. To assess the amount of residual urine if the bladder empties incompletely.

6. To manage incontinence when other measure has failed.
CONTRAINDICATION:
1. Traumatic urethral injury.
2. History of urethral stricture.
3. Resistance to passage.
, 4. High riding prostate.
5. Blood at meatus.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS IN CARING OF PATIENT WITH
A URINARY CATHETER:
1. Clients with indwelling catheter require specific perineal hygiene to reduce
the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI).
2. The use of powder and lotion on the perineum is contraindicated because
of the risk of growth of microorganisms which may ascend the urinary tract.
3. Keep catheter bag below level of bladder.
4. Attach drainage bag to bed frame (not side rails).
5. Secure tubing onto bed-urine should flow freely from catheter to bag (coil
tubing on bed).
6. Empty catheter by every 8 hours or prn.
TYPES OF URINARY CATHETERS:
1. Condom Catheter
- Consists of a soft plastic or rubber sheath, tubing and a collection bag for
the urine. The sheath is placed over the penis and the collection bag is

catheterization.
