THIRD STAGE
,PPH
• Any amount of bleeding from or into the genital trac
following birth of the baby up to the end of the
puerperium, which adversely affects the general
condition of the mother, evidenced by increase in
pulse rate and falling blood pressure is called
postpartum hemorrhage
,TYPES
• Primary (immediate) postpartum hemorrhage is defined as excess
bleeding that occurs within the first 24 hours after delivery.
Two types
• Third stage hemorrhage- bleeding will occur before expulsion of
placenta
• True post partum – Bleeding will occur subsequent to expulsion of
placenta and within hours
• Secondary (late) postpartum hemorrhage is defined as excessive
bleeding occurring between 24 hours after delivery of the baby and
weeks postpartum.
, CAUSES
• Atony of the uterus is defined as the failure of the uterus to contra
adequately after the child is born.
• Incomplete separation of placenta
• Placenta previa
• General anesthesia
• Precipitated labour
• Prolonged labour
• Obesity
