THE OESOPHAGUS
BY OGONNADI, KPOKUECHUKWU CHINUA
, THE OESOPHAGUS
INTRODUCTION
• A narrow muscular tube that
allows food passage from the
pharynx and the stomach.
• Length: 25 cm, but generally
23-37 cm in correspondence
to the individual’s height _
longer in men than in
women.
• Tube is flattened
anteroposteriorly and the
lumen is kept collapsed.
• It dilates only during the
passage of food bolus
, EXTENT
• Extends from the pharynx (C6 level:
lower border of the cricoid
cartilage) to the gastroesophageal
junction (T11).
- Descends in front of vertebral
column (through superior and
posterior parts of mediastinum)
- Pierces diaphragm at level of 10th
thoracic vertebra
- Ends by opening into stomach
(cardiac end) at level of T11
, INTRODUCTION
• Commencement: From the
cricopharyngeus at the level of
the 6th cervical vertebra to the
orifice of the cardia of the
stomach
• Termination: Orifice of the
stomach cardia (after piercing
the diaphragm at the level of
T11 vertebrae).
• It commences in the midline,
but as it descends through the
neck, it inclines to the left side.
