pyrosis (heartburn) - ANSWER the burning sensation caused by the return of
acidic stomach contents into the esophagus
GI bleed - ANSWER Hematemesis, coffee ground emesis, hematochezia, melena
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) - ANSWER A digestive disease in which
stomach acid or bile irritates the food pipe lining.
dyspepsia (indigestion) - ANSWER pain or discomfort during the digestion process
Colonoscopy - ANSWER examination of the colon using a flexible colonoscope
(This is the gold standard to detect colon cancer)
Purple striae (normal) - ANSWER Stretch marks that are purple in color
Abnormal skin - ANSWER pallor, cyanosis, erythema, jaundice and lesions
Cushing syndrome - ANSWER hypersecretion of cortisol (hydrocortisone) by the
adrenal gland
, peristaltic waves - ANSWER waves of muscular contractions that propel contents
from one point to another
Abnormal findings of the abdomen - ANSWER swelling, bulging, herniation,
inflammation, organ enlargement
Abnormal findings when auscultated - ANSWER Hyperactive (high-pitched),
Hypoactive (soft, irregular) and no bowel sounds (constipation, bowel obstruction),
bruits are present in aorta
Abnormal findings percussion over the abdomen - ANSWER excessive, high-
pitched tympanic sounds may indicate distention. Dullness may indicate increased
tissue density such as organ enlargement or an underlying mass. Pain may indicate
peritoneal inflammation.
Abnormal findings when palpating the abdomen - ANSWER tenderness is present,
lump or mass felt, enlarged organs
alveoli - ANSWER smallest structures in the mammary gland
areola - ANSWER dark-pigmented area surrounding the breast nipple
Colostrum - ANSWER thin, milky fluid secreted by the breast during pregnancy
and during the first days after birth before lactation begins
Cooper ligaments - ANSWER suspensory ligaments; fibrous bands extending from
the inner breast surface to the chest wall muscles
