Students' .difficulty .identifying .the .value .of .the .content .and .skills .they .learn .in

.engagement .within .class. .This .issue .has .been .observed .frequently .amongst
.schools .in .the .United .States. .Within .this .action .research .study, .a .comprehensive
.exploration .of .the .effectiveness .of .implementing .a .combination .of .relevance
.interventions .as .an .instructional .intervention .was .conducted. .There .were .sixteen
.participants .in .this .study: .ninth .grade .students .in .attendance .at .a .high .school .in
.Chicago. .The .participants .were .in .the .researcher‘s .English .class, .first .and
.second .period. .The .relevancy .interventions, .direct .communication .followed .by
.self-generation, .were .implemented .daily .for .three .weeks. .This .research
.ultimately .answered .two .questions: .―What .is .the .impact .of .a .relevancy
.intervention .on .ninth .graders' .academic .achievement .in .English .class? .What .is
.the .impact .of .a .relevancy .intervention .on .ninth .graders' .engagement .in .English
.class?‖ .The .analysis .of .quantitative .data .collected .from .surveys, .grade .reports,
.and .event .recordings .and .qualitative .data .collected .from .surveys, .evidenced .that
.the .implementation .of .a .combination .of .relevancy .interventions .had .a .positive
.impact .on .ninth .grade .students .academic .achievement .and .engagement .in
.English .class. .There .was .an .observable .increase .in .students‘ .grade .percentages
.in .English .and .how .often .each .student .volunteered .verbal .participation .within .a
.class .period.
Students .who .were .previously .earning .lower .grades .such .as .Cs, .Ds .and .Fs,
,.evidenced .a .more .significant .improvement .in .their .grades .in .English .class.
