Theoretical Perspectives
Theories - ANS When scientist explain their observations, their answers reflect their theories
Some theories have been used to explain human behaviour for many years
Other theories have been revised and replaced
Theories are NOT FACTS just attempts to explain evidence
Micro Theories - ANS emphasize the relationship within individual famillies
Macro Thoeries - ANS Study the information between society and institutions such as the law,
family, politics etc
7 Theory perspectives - ANS Structural Functionalism-Macro Approach
Systems theory-Micro and Macro Approach
Symbolic Interactionisim-Micro Approach
Social Exchange Theory-Micro Approach
Developmental Theory -Micro Approach
Conflict Theory-Macro Approach
Feminist theory-Macro Approach
Structural Functionalism - ANS Macro
Attempts to explain how society is organized to preform required functions
Focuses on how institutions , such as the law, political system, and the family function
Assumes societies are stable when structures function to benefit society
Examines the roles individuals play to contribute to the bigger picture
Changes and individual differences are seen as disruptions
ADVANTAGE explains how family interacts with society
Emphasizes family strengths rather than weakness
, •(Criticisms do not explain why societies or families change)
DISADVANTAGES
only one acceptable form of family rather than many variations
dosn't deal with interpersonal relationships
Status - ANS a specific position within a social group
Role - ANS the set of behaviors an individual is expected to demonstrate within a status
Norm - ANS most prevalent behaviors in the set role
Example : an individual with a "father" status is expected to take on behaviors such as working,
child care and providing to fill his role its the norm
Systems Theory - ANS Micro and Macro
Attempts to explain how groups of individuals interact as a system and influence each other
Family systems: have a complex organization
Indiviuals within the system influence each other in a reciprocal way
The family system changes when a change in one persons behaviour causes the behavour
causes the behaviour in anothers to evolve
The larger family system contains subsystems (father-child,mother-father)
System - ANS Set of interrelated parts
Genogram - ANS diagram depicts the relationship within the family system
Systems Theory Advantages/Disadvantages - ANS ADVANTAGES
explains the behaviors of individuals as inseparable from the group
Explains why behavior continues in destructive patterns even through generations
DISADVANTAGES
Can be difficult to determine how others within the family are influencing an individual behavior
Overlooks experience of indviduals
Social/ Structural factors, such as unemployment are not taken into consideration
