7 Theoretical Perspectives
Structural Functionalism - ANS -MACRO approach
-Explains how society is organized to perform its required functions effectively
-Individuals have a role to play and each role has a status
ROLE: a set of behaviours one is expected to demonstrate within a status
STATUS: a specific position within a social group
NORM: prevalent behaviours
Social Exchange Theory - ANS -MICRO approach
-Explains the social factors that influence how people interact with relationships
-People act to maximize benefits they get & minimize cots to themselves
-Benefits and costs of relationships are based on perceptions not facts
Symbolic Interactionism - ANS -MICRO APPROACH
Explains how people pick how they act based on perceptions of themselves and others
-People define and interpret their experiences and give them their own meaning
ROLE TAKING: being able to anticipate how others will respond
Systems Theory - ANS -MICRO&MACRO approach
-Attempts to explain how groups of people interact as a system
-There are subsystems within systems
-A chance in 1 member affects everyone else in the system
-A system is a set of interrelated parts
Conflict Theory - ANS -Interdisciplinary MACRO approach
-Explains how power holds society together
-Conflict exists within groups because of inequalities in power
-Groups compete with each other to meet their needs
Feminist Theory - ANS -A branch of conflict theories
-Explains the impact sex & gender has on behaviour
-Issues from the perspective from females
Developmental Theory - ANS -Interdisciplinary MICRO approach
-Describes the pattern of growth and change throughout the human life span
DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS: role expectations that challenge people to develop
ERIK ERIKSON: people develop individual identities to make transition from adulthood
