These notes were the ones I had compiled over the course of my A Levels, which took my grade from a B to consistently above 90%, including in my actual A Level in which I achieved 289/300 (96.3%), so I know these contain all the information you could possibly need to achieve a high score in the actual exam. This, alongside my other resources helped me achieve 84/90 on Paper 3 of the 2024 exam series.

, Required Practical 1a
Make up a volumetric solution and carry out a simple acid-base titration: To prepare a solution of
sodium hydrogensulphate that has a known concentration.

1) Calculate the mass sodium hydrogensulphate solid needed to produce 250cm3 of a 0.100moldm-3
solution. If using the anhydrous solid, the mass to weigh out will be 2.7g – 3.3g, if using the
monohydrate, the mass to weigh out should be 3.1g - 3.8g.
2) Weigh a clean dry weighing boat.
3) Place the weighing boat on the pan of a digital balance and, using a spatula, place into the boat
approximately the mass of sodium hydrogensulphate that you have calculated to be necessary
4) Weigh the weighing boat and its contents accurately and record the precise mass.
5) Pour the contents of the weighing boat into a beaker and reweigh the weighing boat (which may
still contain traces of sodium hydrogensulphate).
6) Calculate the mass of sodium hydrogensulphate that you have transferred. Record all weighings to
the resolution of the balance that you have used.
7) Add approximately 100cm3 of distilled water to the beaker containing the solid and use a glass rod
to stir the contents of the beaker until all of the sodium hydrogensulphate dissolves.
8) Using a funnel, pour the contents of the beaker into a 250cm3 volumetric flask, then using the
wash bottle rinse the beaker and funnel into the same volumetric flask. Rinse the glass rod into
these washings.
9) Make the volumetric flask up to the graduated mark by carefully adding deionised water from the
wash bottle. Ensure not to overshoot the mark.
10) Stopper the volumetric flask and shake it thoroughly to mix the contents of the flask.
11) Calculate the exact concentration in moldm-3 of your solution quoting the value to the appropriate
precision.
