Postulate of the cell theory
What is a cell ?
Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms. It is the smallest unit
of life and can be replicate independently. Cells contain genetic material (DNA or RNA)
and organelles that perform specific functions necessary for life processes such as
metabolism, growth, and reproduction. The study of cell is also known as Cell Biology.
Who discovered the cell ?
Cell was discovered by Robert Hookein 1665. The discovery of the cell was made possible
through the invention of the microscope. He first observed cell in thin slices of bottle cork
(made from Cork Oak Tree).
Robert Hooke
Hooke discovered many tiny pores that he named “cells”. This came from the Latin word
“Cella” (small room). He described the cells as tiny boxes or a honeycomb. He thought that
cells only existed in plants and fungi.
, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Used a handmade microscope to observe pond scum and discovered single-celled
organisms. He called them “animalcules”. He also observed blood cells from fish, birds,
frogs, dogs, and humans.
Spontaneous Generation
It is an obsolete theory that states that living organisms can originate from inanimate
objects.Spontaneous generation, also known as abiogenesis, was a formerly held belief that
living organisms could arise from non-living matter under certain conditions. This idea
suggested that life could spontaneously emerge from substances like mud, decaying meat,
or even sweat. It was widely accepted in ancient times through the Middle Ages and was
