Week 1: Computer File System
Every operating system has files. A file (bestand) is a chunk of data. There are lots of types of
files: video (.MP4, .AVI, .MOV), audio (.MP3, .WAV) image (.JPG, .PNG) text (.docx)
A file has a file name to identify the file and a file extension. The file extension tells your OS
what program has to be used to open the file so your OS knows what to do with it. There are
a lot of different file extensions. Some are compressed, some are not. Also, a lot of operating
systems use their own file extension! A file also shows the time and date it was last edited
and the size of the file.
An application you’re using to do work, stores in the RAM memory. This is memory for short
use. If your PC shuts down it’s all gone. RAM indicates how much stuff your PC can handle at
once. So when you save your file, it now is also saved on a secondary storage device like your
hard disk. When your PC then shuts down, you can open the file that was saved on your hard
disk. Drives are storage devices like your had disk or a USB. When the file is saved on a
storage device, the file location is defined by a system path. A system path is a specifying set
of directories where files are located. For example C:\Documenten\Saxion\Economie\Week1
OS’s have a hierarchical structure of directories: drives, folders (as many as you want), files.
Within your file exlorer (verkenner), you can rename, copy, move and delete your files.
A shortcut is a pointer to the original file, folder or program. It is not a copy of the file. So
when the original file is deleted, the shortcut won’t work since it has nothing to point to.
An executable file is a file that runs a program when it is opened. (.exe). Executable files run
code when it’s opened. (be aware of malware)
To organise files, folders can be used. They’re like a real life folder. You put different files in
a folder to group them.
Application: program that can perform actions
A file is just a chunk of data (a document) that can’t do anything by itself. A word file without
the application word is bullshit.
Week 2: Hardware
Computer: an elektronic device which can take instructions and perform computations
based on those instructions
Characteristics of a computer
- Speed: super fast
- Reliability: low failure
- Accuracy: very accurate
- Diligence: free of boredom, no complaints
- Versatility: used in lots of ways
