,Introduction
Definition of the Plasma Membrane
Biological membrane that separates the cell interior from the
outside environment
Selectively permeable barrier
Composed mainly of a lipid bilayer
Contains embedded proteins and carbohydrates
Key roles: protection, communication, transport, and
maintaining homeostasis
, History
History of the Plasma Membrane
Early Discoveries (1800s)
• First observed with early microscopes.
• 1895: Ernest Overton suggested membranes are made of lipids.
Lipid Bilayer Hypothesis (1925)
• Gorter and Grendel proposed the membrane is a double layer of
lipids.
Danielli-Davson Model (1935)
• Suggested membranes have a lipid bilayer coated with proteins.
Modern Understanding (1980s-Present)
• Advanced microscopes revealed detailed structure and function of
membranes.
