Metaphysical poetry:
The term m. is used to talk about fundamental problems of the nature of the universe,
so man’s functions or place in life
It dates back to the seventeenth century (17) and it’s full of religious references,
astronomy, geography, and alchemy.
The main representative of this type of poetry is J.D.
The poets reflected the crisis of their age and the difficult transition from the
renaissance to the modern age. They had to be men of wit, and show not just their
sensitivity but also their knowledge and cleverness. The term wit means the ability to
create unusual metaphors or images to surprise the reader.
The most important feature was the conceit, an intellectual type of metaphor that
consists of comparing several field of knowledge
paradox, epigrammatic conciseness.
Donne used common forms and words and his poems were dramatic monologues, they
started in media res, with an instant debate.
The diction was rich and varied and there weren't conventional verse-forms.

Go and catch a falling star
That's a poem called the song by j.d., but known as go and c. a f. s.
-It's about his view of women, and the effect they had on him.
he start the poem in the first stanza challenging his friend to do impossible things like
get with child a mandrake root (plant used against infertility), or tell him all about the
past, something that no one can know, tell him who cleft the devil’s foot and teach him
how to hear mermaid’s singing.
-These impossible challenges represent the difficulty to find a true and loyal woman.
-In the last stanza he says that if the friend ever found one, he would go on a
pilgrimage to reach her.
-in the end he expresses that even if at the start a woman seems true, in the end she
will be unloyal.
