Behavior -
-any observable movement of a living thing
-have 1 or more dimensions that can be observed and measure
-how long, often, and intensely it occurs
-impacts the environment
-bounded by laws
-behaviors impacts environment and becomes antecedent for future behavior
Covert behaviors -
Behaviors that cannot be observed by another
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) -
Application of behavior laws, to change socially significant behavior to a meaningful degree
Focuses on observable behavior (overt behavior)
ABA is used in -
-autism
-animal training
-education
-business
-health and fitness
Socially significant behaviors -
-social
-language
,-academic
-daily living
-self care
-vocational
-leisure activities
Characteristics of ABA -
-Applied: use to solve behavioral problems
-Behavioral: behavior changed and measurable
-Analytic: data is being taken down
-Technological: can be replicated
-Conceptually systematic
-Effective
-Generality: must last
Antecedent -
Any event that occurs before the behavior. An environmental condition existing or occuring
immediately before the behavior of interest
Ex. Setting, activity individual engaged in, people they are around, action of people around them
Consequence -
Environmental change that follows the behavior
E.g. Reinforcement, punishment
Reinforcement -
Event following a behavior which increases some dimension of that behavior
Punishment -
, Event following a behavior which decreases that behavior
Positive Reinforcement -
When an occurrence of behavior is followed by the addition of a stimulus which results in
increased behaviors
Negative Reinforcement -
Removal of an aversive stimulus that increases the rate of behavior.
Ex. Time out, response cost
Behavior increases due to escape or avoidance -
Motivating Operations (MO) -
Variables in the environment that alters the relative value of a particular reinforcer at the time
Ex. sleep, medicine, hunger
Variables of Reinforcer Effectiveness -
Immediacy: more immediate reinforcer the more affective
Size: magnitude of reinforcer
Contingency: delivered for only targeted behavior
Schedules of Reinforcement -
Continuous Schedule: for learning a new behavior. Delivering a reinforcement after every correct
response.
