With the objective of responding to several of the most important questions facing agriculture today, this article describes recent research in three Cuban cropping systems: state farms, cooperatives, and small family farmers. Soil management is considered here as a crux of human intervention in agroecosystems, capable of determining the impacts of productive activities upon agricultural and ecosystem functions. Management practices commonly used in each farm system are evaluated using two systems of indicators, one for technological quality and one for agricultural intensification. Soil physical quality is characterized through laboratory analysis of samples taken in the same type of soil under long-term production in state, cooperative, and family farmer cropping systems. Favorable policies and farmer organizations are discussed as indispensible elements of sustainable agricultural development. The relationships between soil management, local knowledge, and food access are explored in the Cuban context and as directions for food system studies. KEYWORDS farm systems, soil management, agricultural intensification, local knowledge, soil structure, Cuba INTRODUCTION Global agriculture is at a crossroads that in many ways resembles the options before humanity as a whole in this twenty-first century. The dire need to develop food systems capable of adequately satisfying human need, including redressing the needs of a billion people who currently suffer from hunger, must be combined with ecological considerations of a novel urgency and complexity (Ericksen et al., 2010). As fresh water resources become scarce and energy needs threaten to overpower food needs, basic questions of humanity’s livelihood become policy questions of our times. Within agriculture, food sovereignty is a concept being promoted by international peasant organizations such as the Via Campesina, which sees in the global processes of the present day a historic confrontation between the agribusiness model of agriculture and the peasant agriculture model (Via Campesina, 2011). A core question in every country is how natural resources will be controlled: through market logic or through smallholder, culturally diverse productive systems. Many of the complex issues confronting agriculture (agrofuels, biotechnology, increasing price volatility on international markets, soil and water management, etc.) can be seen in light of this struggle for social control over resource management. Agricultural intensification is often considered a process guided by the technologies and tendencies of industrial agriculture. As such, it is thought to contain all of the contradictions of that model: a capacity to increase food productivity by land unit, but only by degrading resources like soil and water, severely limiting agrobiodiversity, and minimizing the role and importance of people in farm systems (Rosset, 2011). This understanding of agricultural intensification is warranted; experiences of “Green Revolution” solutions around the world created food systems that are highly dependent on commodity markets and external inputs, exacerbating social, economic, and ecological vulnerabilities in the era of global environmental change (Eakin, 2010). The development of agricultural systems based on the logic of specialization and maximizing profit has created negative externalities and environmental consequences that put in jeopardy the long-term pro
