, Definitions to Define:
Female reproductive system:
• Cervix - allows fluids, such as menstrual blood, to pass from the uterus into the vagina
• Clitoris - The center of the vulva
• Corpus luteum - secretes more estrogen and progesterone to cause the uterine lining to
grow
• Endometrium - thickens and disintegrates during the menstrual cycle in response to
varying levels of hormones.
• Follicles - a female sex hormone; Ovaries contain around 200,000 follicles each, Follicle
cells produce estrogen
• Labia - folds of skin around your vaginal opening
• Ovary - female glands that produce eggs for fertilization and make estrogen and
progesterone
• Oviduct (Fallopian tube) - The passageway where the ovum passes from the ovary to the
uterine cavity; carries eggs from the ovary to the uterus
• Pubic bone - a bone that makes up the pelvis; located between the abdomen and thighs.
• Urinary Bladder - spherical-shaped organ that holds urine
• Urethra - the tube that makes urine leave your bladder
• Uterus - pear-shaped organ in a woman's pelvis; where a fetus develops and grows
• Vagina - a muscular canal that extends from the vulva to the neck of the uterus; where the
lining of the uterus is shed during menstruation, where penetration can occur during sex and
where a baby descends during childbirth
• Bartholin’s gland - mucoid secretion that aids in vaginal and vulvar lubrication
Testes and associated structures
• Male sex cells (sperm) are produced in the testes. They consist of highly coiled tubes
surrounded by connective tissue.
