The test will focus on your response to literature and will consist of two sections:
Poetry
Folklore
Drama
It will be compulsory to answer all the questions in each section.

Section A: Poetry
You need to study the two poems 'Bats' and 'The Door'.
Below is some terminology you also need to study for the sake of answering
your questions in the test:
Connotation - an association YOU make with any given word or phrase.
Denotation - the dictionary meaning of a word.
Literal - factual.
Figurative - metaphorically speaking; suggestive ideas.
Simile - comparison using the words 'like' or 'as'.
Metaphor - a direct comparison without using the words 'like' or 'as'.
Personification - to give human qualities to objects.
Antithesis - compares and contrasts ideas or statements within a
sentence.
Irony - implies the opposite of what is said.
Rhyme - scheme depends on sound, not sight.
aabb - couplet
abab-cross rhyme
no rhyming words - free verse
Section B: Folklore
You need to study the two folktales 'The legend of El Dorado' (page 63),
'Why Bat hangs upside down' (page 34), and 'Van Hunks and the Devil'
(page 39). These three folktales can be found in your Grade 8 Core Reader.
You need to read and understand the story, as well as study the questions and
answers of both tales.
Pay close attention to the following:
The glossary of both tales. This is the list of words related to the tales with
its meanings.
The glossary of literary terms - found on page 112-117 in your Core
Reader. Focus on the following terms:
