DVA1501 - Unit 1 - Introduction to Development Studies Questions and Ansswers 1) Concept of development - Development is the opposite of poverty - Development and poverty are relative and subjective terms. - Development concepts are value-laden (our values create the meaning of development and poverty). - First vs. Third world (Economic) - Rich vs. Poor - Economic growth - North vs. South (Geo-political) - Political - Developed vs. Developing (Neo-economic) - Modernisation - SDGs vs MDGs 2) First vs Third World (and others) - Classifies status of wealth and economy. - Classifies stability and health of the country or region. - USA, UK and Japan and other western-bloc countries. - G8 countries - First vs. Third (First = Developed, economic powers of colonial heritage, Third = not involved in global politics, outside of political tenses of cold war, experienced horrors of colonialism and is fearful of neo-colonialsm). - North vs South (More wealth is positioned in the northern hemisphere in comparison to the southern hemisphere.) - Developed vs. Developing (Developed = Wealthy, good infrastructure, population declination, stability in health and economy/ Developing = opposite) 3) Advantages and disadvantages of North vs. South - First vs. Third - Capitalist vs Socialist vs Everyone else - Excluded third world because of fears of colonialism - Developed vs. Developing - Modernisation from IMF and World Bank - North vs. South - Global statistics of development - Advantages = We can see what stage each country was in, however it was primarily based on economies, location and political affiliations - Disadvantages = It set unreasonable development goals outside of the context of nations. Did not take into account the ambitions and contexts of nations. Did not acknowledge historical issues/implciations. - Countries in the south are perceived as undeveloped and backwards. - Australia shows us that this classification is entirely geographically inaccurate. Most developing countries are in the south.
