Assignment 1- Causes of War & Impact of War and
Conflict on the UK Public Services
There are many different types of causes of war and conflict in the world for example, raw
materials. Each type of conflict will have an impact on the Public services depending on
what war it is and the causes of it. This assignment will include all the causes and types of
war as well as focusing on the impact of war and conflict on the UK public services using real
life examples.
Types of War
There are various types of war that occur globally. One type of war is a Proxy, this is defined
as an armed conflict between two parties which include either factions or countries. A proxy
war is also taken place on behalf of parties which aren’t involved, directly. Its purpose is to
minimise escalation from it becoming a bigger war between two countries. The counties
that are at war will most likely be armed, funded and given advice from external forces. An
example of this type of war is the Cold War.
Another type of war to exist is a Conventional war, this is when military weapons are used
between 2 or more states in an open battle. The weapons that are used won’t necessary
involve; nuclear, biological or chemicals only conventional weapons such as guns. The main
aim of this war is to use weapons to target the rival army. An example of a Conventional is
the Vietnam War.
A Civil war is when different troops of people who live in the same country fight against
one another. It is defined as a type of conflict that involves physical violence. Civil wars are
one of the most intense types of war because the country is destroying itself by
battling each other. An example of this is the American Civil War.
Guerrilla war is a type of conflict which is fought by civilians or those who don’t serve in
the military. The aim of this type of war is to destroy an existing government or to fight
against a bigger military force. This type of war was used in the Chinese Civil War.
Cyber wars are any virtual conflicts that target political data on a rival's computer or any
other virtual system. This type of conflict can occur by stealing classified data from the
enemy. In 2011 the Canadian Government had reported a huge cyber-attack against its
agencies, this resulted in them having to disconnect from the internet altogether.
A Sectarian war is a conflict which uses violence from groups or sects. An someone is a
religious sectarian this will result in them being loyal to a specific religious group/sect. This
type of conflict is common around the world, it was a cause of the First Iraqi Civil war.
The last type of war is a Total war, this is a military type of conflict which involves every
opponent to make sacrifices to win the whole war. Different countries come together to
fight in this type of war for either economic, social or even political issues. An example of
this war is world war 2.

Major Causes of War
Each conflict that has developed into a war has a major cause and reason behind it, there
are many different major causes of these wars. One of which include Raw Materials, this is
when a country comes to a realisation that they are in need of specific raw materials to
provide to their country or to promote a growing industry. Raw materials include; oil, gold,
coal and many more. An example of this is the current conflict in Eastern Congo, which is
based around gold and diamonds, many citizens from neighbouring countries have
