Harshal Maganti
, States’ Right
Many argue that the main cause of the Civil War was an argument over states’
rights. The South believed in states’ rights, the idea that states get to make
their own laws. The tenth amendment allowed states to make their own laws,
as long as they did not go against federal law. The North and South argued over
how much power the federal government should hold. The North wanted
increased federal power, while the South wanted increased States’ Rights.
These differences could have been a reason that 11 Southern states seceded
between 1860 and 1861.
