1 . DOCUSATE stool softener
Hold for: loose stools
Patient education: "This is a stool softener your doctor
prescribed, it will help loosen your stool and make it
easier to go."
2. ASPIRIN Anticoagulant (aka blood thinner) works by reducing
platelet production aggregation (less platelets you
will bleed more)
Patient education: "This is your aspirin your doctor
prescribed, it helps to thin your blood. You may bruise or
bleed a little more easily."
3. NITROGLYCERIN Vasodilate (vein opening up)/Creates better blood
PASTE flow with dilation. PRESSURE WILL ALWAYS
DECREASE (20 Points at least)
VERY BAD HEADACHE
Hold for: systolic BP less than 100
Patient education: "This is nitroglycerine paste your
doctor prescribed, this may make you feel dizzy. Please
don't try to get up without me, use your call bell and I will
be happy to help."
4. NYSTATIN (pow- Antifungal (apply in areas that don't get a
lot of air flow) der) applied to perineal area and underneath
pannus.
Patient explanation: "This is a powder to help prevent
infections, I want to keep you safe/healthy in the
hospital."

5. FUROSEMIDE Diuretic (loop diuretic) (Lasix)
Hold for: K+ less than 3.5, Hold for systolic BP less than
1 00
Patient explanation: "This medication is a diuretic, what
that does is makes you urinate. That helps draw extra fluid
off the body. You will have more urinary urgency and it
may make you feel dizzy. I want you to be safe, call me if
you need anything."
6. LEVOTHYROXINE Hormones to make sure thyroid is functioning properly.
(synthroid) Patient explanation:
Helps metabolism hormones, helps keep the body in
a good/better place.
7. LOTENSIN ACE inhibitor. Decreases blood pressure/blood pressure
management
Hold for: systolic BP less than 100
Patient explanation: "This is a blood pressure pill your
doctor prescribed. It may make you dizzy. I want you
to be safe, call me if you need anything."
8. METOPROLOL Beta-blocker. Blood pressure management.
Hold for: systolic BP less than 100, Hold for HR less
than 60
Patient explanation: "This is a blood pressure pill your
doctor prescribed. It may make you dizzy. I want you to
be safe, call me if you need anything."
