, Critically Analyze SOLE (Self-Organised Learning Environments) Activities
1. Summary of the Main Aspects of SOLE Activities
SOLE, or Self-Organised Learning Environments, is an innovative educational
approach developed by scholar and researcher Sugata Mitra. The main idea behind
SOLEs is to create a learning environment where students are encouraged to work
independently and collaboratively to explore complex questions. The key aspects of
SOLE activities are as follows:
▪ Group Work: Students are organized into small groups of four, which they
select themselves. This promotes a sense of ownership and responsibility
among learners.
▪ Complex Questions: Each group is given a challenging, open -ended
question such as "Why do we slip on wet surfaces?" or "Do trees breathe?"
These questions are designed to provoke critical thinking and exploration.
▪ Use of Technology: Each group is provided with an internet-enabled laptop,
allowing them to research and gather information. Technology plays a central
role in SOLEs, as it provides students with access to a wealth of resources
and information.
▪ Student Autonomy: Other than providing the initial instructions and the
necessary technology, teachers take a step back and allow students to
explore the question on their own. This fosters independence and self -
directed learning.
▪ Presentation: After a set period, each group presents their findings to th e
class. This step reinforces learning, as students must organize and
communicate their ideas effectively.
▪ Minimal Teacher Intervention: Teachers act as facilitators rather than
traditional instructors, guiding students when necessary but largely allowing
them to manage their own learning.
