COP26
What is COP26?
COP-26 is the United Nations Climate Change Conference, the meeting/uniting of
country leaders (parties) to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris
Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. A mutual
agreement between countries to limit climate change and change our ways for the
better of the environment.
What are the aims?
The four main goals of Cop26 are:
- Secure global net-zero by mid-century and keep 1.5C degrees within reach. Global
net zero is the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the
amount removed from the atmosphere. We reach net zero when the amount we add
is no more than the amount taken away. They want to limit global temperature rises
to 1.5C to avoid the most dangerous climate change.
- adapt to protect communities and natural habitats
- mobilise finance
- and work together to deliver
They aim to achieve this by reducing the use of coal, slow/reduce deforestation,
speed up the switch to electric vehicles, and encourage investment in renewables.
Who was involved?
Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, EU
representatives from the 27 member states, France, Ghana, India, Israel, Italy,
Nigeria, Scotland, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland and the US are all the
countries attending COP26
What were the outcomes?
Significant declarations were made to help the people directly affected by and
leading the way in the fight against climate change.
However, there were parts of the conference where there was lack of clarity around
how African communities on the front line of the climate crisis can access key funds
and this raises concerns about the seriousness of these decisions.
- Nature was recognised as a crucial solution for climate action
- Increased climate finance for adaptation
- $2 Billion was pledged by world leaders to support the restoration of 100
million hectares of land in Africa.
