INTRODUCTION
This module discusses the study of man from the past to the present,
primitive or civilized, ancient or modern. It focuses on culture as a basis for
studying and understanding different groups of people in the world. In the
sociological aspect, it studies society in order to understand and explain the
processes in the interaction of people living together. As such, sociology adds
to the existing knowledge about social interaction, institution, processes and
problems in a changing environment and culture.
After studying the module, you should be able to:
1. Develop a wide perspective of the concepts and theories about the origin
and history of human beings.
2. Have a critical understanding of the evolution processes and issues that
surrounds the evolution of man from ancient to modern times.
3. Greater comprehension through an in-depth analysis of the various social
processes, organizations and institutions in the society as a whole.
4. Have an advance evaluative attitude towards learning the importance of
culture in our everyday way of life.
5. Experience a hands-on approach to learning the existence of
anthropological evidences and sociological concepts in the Philippine
setting.
6. Construct sociological essays, position papers, reflection papers, and
critique in some issues and articles read in newspapers, magazines,
journals, and books.
7. Conduct researches as regards on the socio-cultural views on important
political, economic, and social trends, issues and problems.

Introduction to Anthropology
- the study of humankind.
“Anthropos” is a Greek word which mean man or human.
- “logos” means knowledge or study
- Anthropologists are generally thought of as an individual who travel
to the world to study various people or who dig deep into the earth to
uncover fossil remains or the tools and pots of people of all periods.
Beginning with the immediate ancestors of humans, who lived few
million years ago.
- Anthropology traces the evolution of development of humans until
the present. Every part of the world that has ever contained a human
population is of interest to anthropologists.
- It is the broad study of humankind around the world and throughout
time. It is concerned with both the biological and the cultural aspects
of humans.

1. Physical Anthropology
- deals with the origin & evolutionary process of man.
- concerned with body structure & other biological attributes like genetic
make-up and changes of the human aspects of life.
- to reconstruct by searching for and study the buried hardened remains
or impressions known as Fossils.
