Cardiovascular physiology refers to the study of the heart and blood vessels' functions in circulating blood throughout the body. The heart pumps blood through the circulatory system, which is vital for delivering oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to tissues, and removing waste products like carbon dioxide. The heart operates in two main phases: systole(contraction) and diastole (relaxation). During systole, the heart pumps blood from the ventricles into the arteries (aorta and pulmonary artery). During diastole, the heart relaxes, allowing the chambers to fill with blood from the veins. Cardiac output is the volume of blood pumped by the heart per minute, determined by heart rate and stroke volume (amount of blood pumped per beat). Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against artery walls and is regulated by factors like vascular resistance, blood volume, and heart function. Key structures include the sinoatrial (SA) node(the heart’s natural pacemaker), the atrioventricular (AV) node, and the conduction system that coordinates heartbeats. Blood vessels, such as arteries, veins, and capillaries, distribute blood and regulate blood flow via vasoconstriction and vasodilation. Overall, cardiovascular physiology ensures efficient circulation to maintain homeostasis and support bodily functions.
