The probation service has a relationship with every other agency in the criminal justice
system. It is probably most closely linked to the courts. Every day courts will send offenders
straight to the probation services if they have been given community sentences. Probation
services oversee these court sentences and will organise court orders such as unpaid hours
of work, drug treatment orders and electronic tags.
Probation services also have a relationship with prisons. When an offender is released from
prison they are handed over to the probation services who will help them reintegrate into
society and try to ensure that they do not reoffend.
Probation services may have to involve the police if offenders fail to make appointments or
meet the requirements of their sentence, for example, not attending their unpaid hours of
work. Police may have to re-arrest these people.
The CPS will send files to the Probation services so that they have as much information as
possible about the offenders that they are trying to rehabilitate.
The Government are responsible for funding the Probation services so they will
communicate with them regularly about budgets. The government may also advise probation
services about what to prioritise in terms of the rehabilitation of offenders

Prisons are directly funded by the government. There has been lots of government cuts in
recent years and prisons have complained about overcrowding and not having enough staff.
Police are responsible for transporting offenders to and from courts to prisons. Police
officers might also visit prisons to interview prisoners as part of an on-going investigation.
Courts will obviously communicate to prisons whenever an offender is given a prison
sentence letting them know to expect a new offender and how long their sentence will be.
Whenever someone is released from prisons, they are handed over to probation services
who will oversea their reintegration into society.
Finally, the CPS may send files to prisons so that they have all the necessary details about
any offender serving their sentence in prison.
