Risk Assessment for The Green Valley Mall
For this risk assessment, I have chosen a fictional facility, the Green Valley Mall. This is a large
shopping mall located in an urban area. It has been open for business for over 40 years and is well-known
for its shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The mall is open seven days a week, from 10:00AM
to 10:00PM. While it is a great place to shop and enjoy entertainment, it is also vulnerable to potential
threats such as terrorism, vandalism, and theft. In order to mitigate these risks, it is important to undertake
a comprehensive risk assessment process (Hubbard, 2020).
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has developed a risk assessment process
to help organizations identify and mitigate potential threats (Hubbard, 2020; Kennett et al., 2005). This
process involves several steps, including threat identification and rating, asset value assessment,
vulnerability assessment, risk assessment, consideration of mitigation options, development of an action
plan, and consideration of additional security measures (Hubbard, 2020). This article will explain each of
these steps in detail and how they can be applied to the Green Valley Mall in order to reduce the risks
associated with it.
Threat Identification and Rating
The first phase in the FEMA risk assessment process is the identification and rating of potential
threats (Hubbard, 2020; Kennett et al., 2005). This process involves identifying and evaluating the
possible dangers that may be posed to a facility, including as acts of terrorism, vandalism, theft, and other
forms of criminal activity (Hubbard, 2020; Mishra et al., 2020; Kennett et al., 2005). In order to assign a
score to these dangers, we have to take into account the possibility that they will materialize, the possible
degree of the damage they will cause, and the potential repercussions for the facility if they do
materialize.
Due to the uncommon nature of terrorist attacks, there is a minimal probability that an act of
terrorism will take place at a certain location. However, the likelihood of a terrorist strike being very
severe is rather high, and the effects of such an assault may be catastrophic (Hubbard, 2020). Because it is
accessible to members of the general public and because it is situated in an urban area, a facility is more
