Assist Control (A/C) Answer • A/C will deliver a set amount of breaths per minute yet will
permit patients desiring a higher rate to take spontaneous breaths themselves.
• If the patient can take a spontaneous breaths, the ventilator senses that the patient is
taking a spontaneous breath by the (-) flow of air and assists the breath by DELIVERING
THE SET TIDAL VOLUME.
- The patient can breathe as many times a minute they wish but will get the same TV w/
each breath.
• Breath-to-breath interval relies on the established RR
-If the established RR is 12 and a breath is not triggered within 5 sec, ventilator will
deliver a controlled (ventilator-triggered) breath to the patient
this number of established breaths will be given by the ventilator within a minute
supplied the patient is not attempting to breathe.
The ventilator won't let the patient breathe less than the set amount.
• A/C = 18 + 8 (Patient breaths) = 26 total bpm
*May need to decrease assistance of machine or else patient can hyperventilate.
