Four Freedoms - Who: FDR Where: USA When: January 6, 1941 What: Freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Why: FDR's Four Freedoms were meant to generate language of naitonal unity in the lead up to WWII. The unity it generated was meant to obscure divisions within American Society which had intensified due to debate over whether or not to enter the war. The Four Freedom's served to broadcast the message that America would fight to preserve freedoms enjoyed individually or within their own family. The emphasis on private freedoms became more and more prominent after the war as well. FDR hoped to spread the Four Freedoms across the globe. Freedom from fear for FDR meant not only a desire for peace, but also security across the globe. Freedom from want was FDR's most ambitious goal as it meant ensuring a quality standard of living for all. Freedom from Want was also the promise most Americans would be excluded from. The Four Freedoms, as announced by FDR, represented a step away from the coercive patriotism of WWI. Unlike WWI, WWII was defined by a broader appreciation and celebration of protections against a tyrannical government in comparison to NAzi Germany.
