Network is the connection of computing devices on the same for the purpose of
sharing or exchanging resources. Network enables device to communicate with
each other with information and data. Computer connects with each other using
Transmission control protocol (TCP) or internet protocol (IP). These are
communication protocols which are used in interconnection of network devices in
order to provide end to end communications. In order computer to communicate
with other devices on network, there must be network interface card installed on
that computer that is connected to the modem then router or switch to allow
computer to access the internet and connects with other computers. The
following are the communication devices and their explanation why they are
needed and what technology they use to communicate:
Communication devices are the hardware components that assists in
transmission of data. Examples of communication devices are Bluetooth devices,
infrared devices, modem, network card, Wi-Fi devices and others.
Network card. It is also called network interface card (NIC). This is the
communication device which allow computers or network devices which
does not have built-in network capability to access the use of internet and
allowing possible transmission of any data through network. We need
network card for communication because it provides functionality to the
computer such as data transmission, network traffic engineering. Network
interface cards are of different types. There are of wired NICs, wireless,
USB, fiber optic. The following are the components of network interface
card:
Speed. All network interface cards rating in speed in terms of Mbps
that indicate the performance of the card in computer network with
ample bandwidth. If the bandwidth is lower, then multiple computer
connected with the same controller, this will slow down the labelled
speed. Example of speed of Network interface card are 100Mbps,
1000Mbps, 1Gbps.
, Driver. This is the software that passes data between and network
interface card. Once you installed network interface card on your
computer, then the driver software of that NIC is also downloaded.
Mac address. This is the unique address assigned to network
interface controller. It is also called Physical address. These are used
to deliver data packet to the computer.
Connectivity LED. In network interface card, LED notify user when
network is connected, and data is being sent.
How network cards communicate.
A Network Interface Card (NIC) provides a computer with a dedicated, full-time
connection to a network by implementing the physical layer circuitry necessary
for communicating with a data link layer standard, such as Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Each
card represents a device and card be prepare, transmit and control the flow of
data on the network. The NIC uses the OSI model to send signals at physical layer,
transmit packets at the network layer and operate as an interface at TCP/IP layer.
The network card operates as a middleman between a computer and data
network. For example, when user request web, the computer will pass the
request to the network card which converts it into electrical impulses. Those
impulses are received by web server on the internet and respond by sending
webpage back to the network card as electrical signals. The card gets these signals
and translates them into the data that computer displays.
, Bluetooth devices. These are wireless technology devices that allow
exchanging of data in computers, mobile phones and peripheral devices
over short distances. Th e purpose of Bluetooth is to allow communication
between devices without physically connected (wiring connection).
Bluetooth technology developed in 1994 for replacement of cable to
wireless. It uses 2.4GHz and creates 10-meter radius wireless network
which is known as Personal Area Network (PAN). Bluetooth allow you to
send page to the printer which is another room without connection of
cables. Using Bluetooth high speed technology, Bluetooth v3.0 +Hs can use
up to 24 Mbps of data which is faster than the 802.11b Wi-Fi standard.
How Bluetooth devices communicate.
Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communication technology that enables
mobile and other devices to communicate with each other. Bluetooth is widely
used on computers, mobile phones, tablets, and even home electronics, such as
televisions. The iPhone includes built-in Bluetooth support, so you can use this
wireless technology to connect to other Bluetooth-capable devices. The most
likely devices to connect to an iPhone in this way are Bluetooth headphones or
headsets or car audio/entertainment/information systems, but you can also use
Bluetooth to connect to other kinds of devices, most notably keyboards,
computers, iPod touches, iPads, and other iPhones.
To connect Bluetooth devices together, you pair them. In Bluetooth, pairing
enables two Bluetooth devices to communicate with each other. For devices to
find and identify each other so they can communicate, one or both must be
discoverable, which means they broadcast a Bluetooth signal other device can
detect and connect to.
