After studying this section, you will be able to:
- Describe how people are distributed over the world
- Explain why certain places are more populated than others
Population density
- The distribution of the people on our planet is very uneven.
o Population distribution means the patron of where people live.
- Some places in the world has many densely populated areas. This means that many people
live close to each other.
o For example Norway is a sparsely populated area, this means that on one kilometer
not many people live.
- If you want to show the population distribution on a map you first have to measure the
population density.
o This calculation show how many people live in a square kilometer.
If you divide the inhabitants by the surface you know the population density.

Historical reasons for population distribution
- There are different reasons for the way people are distributed over the planet. Physical
conditions were the most important reason.
The most densely populated places The most scarcely populated areas had:
offered:
- Fresh water, like a river or lake - Extreme climates, like the desert of
- Flat land with fertile soil, like the delta poles
of a river - Mountains, like the Himalayas
- A temperate climate, like a Sea - Dense vegetation, like rainforest
climate.
Population distribution today
- Today, the historical choices for settling in specific areas are still visible.
o But, because of technological inventions, it has become possible to settle in more places
than before.
- In our world today, densely populated places are mainly growing for economic reasons. Many
people, especially in LEDCs (Less economically developed countries or poor countries), move
to the cities in their country for a job.
- City’s close to the sea attract people because, then you can trade better with the rest of the
world
