The preparation of 70% ethanol solution is a fundamental laboratory procedure with widespread applications in various scientific disciplines including biology, chemistry, and medicine. A 70% alcohol solution is better for disinfecting than higher concentrations .70% ethanol is bactericidal. 70% ethanol solutions are used in laboratories, research settings, healthcare facilities, industrial applications, and production processes as a reagent and cleaner. In microscopic anatomy settings, a 70% ethanol solution is used for histology tissue preparation. This solution is used in microbiology labs to cold wash pellets during RNA and DNA extraction, analysis, and precipitation. High-quality DNA and RNA form the basis of genomic and genetic investigations. 70% Ethanol is commonly used as an antiseptic in laboratory environments. It has the highest effective concentration at 70% compared to 95% or 100%. This solution is ideal for sterilizing laboratory workbenches and electronics lab benches. It is perfectly suited for formulating alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

, Introduction
Ethanol is a commonly used antiseptic in the lab environment. It has the highest effective
concentration at 70 % compared to a stronger solution. This occurs due to alcohol’s ability to
coagulate proteins on contract. A higher concentration of charcoal inflicts a very rapid
coagulation of proteins in the cell wall or membrane of target organisms, effectively blocking
further penetration of the organisms and its subsequent neutralization. Because of this, a more
diluted 70%concetration is used for optimal penetration.
70% ethanol is a clear, colorless liquid with a molecular formula of C2H5OH and a
molecular weight of 46.07. It is more effective than higher concentrations of ethanol.
70% ethanol solutions are used in homes for cleaning, for manufacturing medicinal products
and in laboratories as chemical reagents. A good recipe for a 70% non-denatured ethanol
solution is to blend 70 milliliters of pure ethyl alcohol and 30 milliliters of distilled or DI
water (deionized water). This is 100 milliliters of solution which is about 3.4 ounces.

Procedures to make 70% Ethanol
Materials:
 100% ethanol (absolute alcohol)
 Distilled water
 Measuring cylinder
 Funnel
 Bottle labeled 70% ethanol.
 Gloves and lab coat for safety

Procedure:
a) Calculate the ratio of ethanol to water. For a 70% ethanol solution, the ratio is alcohol
to 3 parts waters.
b) Determine the total volume needed. For example, for a final volume of 500 ml
requires 350 ml of alcohol and 150 ml of water.
c) Pour the calculated amount of ethanol into a measuring into a measuring cylinder.
d) Add the required amount of distilled water to reach the total volume.
e) Mix the solution thoroughly by gently swirling or stirring.
f) Transfer the solution into labeled bottle for storage and use.

Equations for making perfect measurements of this aqueous
solution:
To prepare a 70% ethanol solution from a concentrated stock solution (e.g., 95% ethanol by
volume) and distilled water, you can use the dilution equation:

C 1V 1= C 2V 2
