Mary: Mary the Virgin and Mary Magdalene
Mary the Virgin, “Mother of Jesus”: The protector of virgins and symbolic
of the piety and discretion that should be displayed when approaching erotic
subjects and sexual desire in oneself, as a woman. When Mary became
pregnant with Jesus, she was fearful of her husband’s reaction, as she would
be deemed as unfaithful to him because they had had no sexual intercourse
in keeping with tradition. Similarly, women are admonished by Western
religious authorities to keep themselves undefiled before marriage and if one
loses their virginity prior to a marital bond be it due to sexual assault or
simply their own desires, they would be labelled as unclean. She also
portrayed a very submissive woman in her marriage and serves as a model
for that as well
Mary Magdalene appears in stark contrast to the Virgin Mary. She was a
repentant prostitute who belonged to the intimate group of Jesus’ friends.
