Clinical Question
The focus of our group is to discuss the importance of the nursing home antimicrobial
stewardship module. Nursing homes have been helpful to our communities for a long time by
providing nursing services to elderly adults and children as well. However, they have
encountered many obstacles hindering their service delivery, such as inaccurate medicine, for
example. In particular, our research will concentrate on finding a potential solution to the
issue of prescribing incorrect antibiotics. Antimicrobial stewardship appears to be the most
viable solution to the problem. Many hospitals in the United States are reporting the excess
administration of wrong antibiotics by nurses working at nursing homes. According to
Cantudo Cuenca et al. (2020), 75% of antibiotics are inappropriately prescribed in nursing
homes (Cantudo Cuenca et al., 2020). The PICOT question for the paper is: How does the
nursing home antimicrobial stewardship module helps in avoiding inappropriate
administration of antibiotics? Careful use of the nursing home antimicrobial stewardship
module suffices to eliminate or reducing the administration of wrong antibiotics.
Despite the irrefutable advantages, nursing homes bring to the health of many
children and the elderly, the inappropriate administration of antibiotics necessitates careful
examination and research to ensure reduced deaths and medical complications. According to
Härkänen et al. (2020), 46% of the nursing home discrepancies were due to omissions, such
as the administration of wrong antibiotics since they were the main drug administered.
Patients were found taking different medications from the ones prescribed before their
discharge to nursing home (Härkänen et al., 2020). It makes evident that most healthcare
professionals, particularly nurses, are incompetent or do not follow the nursing home
antimicrobial stewardship module. Finding a possible solution on the high number of
inappropriate administration of antibiotics is essential. According to Houser (2018), finding a
solution to medical challenges enhances the elimination or reduction of many other related
