Medical Ethics Case Study

Utilitarianism

Option one means that I would report the mother to Child Protective Services. The short-

term consequences would be that the mother would face stringent measures from Child

Protective Services because coining is considered maltreatment in the US. I would also feel

proud of myself because of adhering to my professional code(Dimmock& Fisher,2020). On a

long-term basis, the mother will not be able to perform coining in the future; hence his son may

suffer in the future before they seek medical assistance. Overall, option one seems like the best

option I should take as a general practitioner because it is in accordance with my professional

code. The second option means I would not report the mother to Child Protective Services. I

would contradict my professional code of ethics, thereby risking my career. On a long-term

basis, I would encourage the mother to continue with the practice, which causes bruises on his

son. Overall, option two does not seem to be a good option since it contradicts my professional

code of ethics.

Utilitarianism would require me to consider the alternative courses of action I would take.

Secondly, it would require me to determine all the harms and benefits of each alternative for

everyone affected (Dimmock& Fisher,2020). Thirdly, it would require me to pick the course of

action that provides the greatest benefit after considering the costs involved. Using this approach,

I would go by option one and report the mother. I would uphold my professional code of ethics

to ensure that the boy is protected. On the hand, the mother would face repercussions from Child

Protective Services.
