What is Science?
An organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world
Life
Life (cf. biota) is a characteristic that distinguishes objects that have signaling and self-sustaining
processes from those that do not, either because such functions have ceased (death), or else because
they lack such functions and are classified as inanimate.
Attributes of Living Things
Complex Organization
Metabolism (Catabolic, Anabolism)
Movement
Reproduction
Responsiveness
Some forms of life may not show all aspects at a given point in time, but are still alive
What is Biology?
The study of life
Scientific Method
, Observation, Questions, Hypothesis, Prediction, Experiment
Observation
The act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way
Induction vs Deduction
To Deduce is to draw a specific conclusion from a general principle. (General-->Specific)
To induce is to derive a general principle from specific observations. (Specific --> General)
Example:
Deduction- Because all animals with hair are mammals, we can deduce that the furry thing outside is a
mammal
Induction- Because every mammal we've ever seen has hair, we might induce that all mammals have hair
Inductions are often wrong, to recognize the difference between the two, look for the word "all." If
the original observation has it, it is a deduction.
Statistical Analyses
These test provide rules to help decide whether a difference is one that is beyond what would be
expteced by ordinary fluctuations
Evolution
A concept that all organisms are related to one another by common ancestry
Not proven, it is an evolving hypothesis
Lamarck
